Social Entrepreneur: A person who recognizes a social need and addresses it with an entrepreneurial venture, measuring his/her ‘bottom line’ by whether or not the problem is solved and change is made rather than by profit.
The ability to empathize is what separates us from every other living thing on Earth. Innately, we are our brother’s keepers and our sister’s keepers, and when people are in trouble, we want to help. When you combine this human trait with our capacity for business, the social entrepreneur is born.
There are people in the world doing incredible things, from Kiva (www.kiva.org), a not-for-profit organization that connects donors with specific entrepreneurs in the developing world in order to help lift them out of poverty, to Citizens Schools (www.citizenschools.org), a volunteer organization that provides hands-on after school programs for middle school students across the country.
Each of these ventures was started with a social issue and an idea followed by help, hard work, and dedication.
You too can do incredible things. Let the SESL Challenge be your start!
