SESL offers faculty, students, and the communities they serve an outside-the-classroom educational opportunity that creatively and passionately engages students in a real world scenario in which they can see the immediate relevance and applicability of their work.
This student-directed program fosters out-of-the-box thinking in a real-world context, provides participants with feedback and critiques from community leaders, and offers students the ability to translate classroom learning into real world action. SESL offers a unique and valuable experience students can draw upon throughout their careers.
In the process, both traditional and non-traditional learners are challenged to identify their strengths and work within a team of members who might work differently, foster brainstorming techniques, learn how to deal with conflict effectively, refine presentation and public speaking skills, practice time management, and most importantly, convert what they are learning in the classroom into real world applications that enrich their communities.
The SESL Challenge offers high school and college faculty a vehicle to link classroom curriculum to a real-world, experiential learning platform in which students learn about and experience social entrepreneurship. Engagement, outreach, community building, and service-learning are part of the SESL experience, which challenges student teams to design, research, and present to a panel of statewide judges an innovative, realistic solution to an identified community challenge.
