The Social Entrepreneurial Student Leadership Challenge is a 10-week business plan competition in which teams of high school and college students (in separate contests) find creative, sustainable ways to address social problems in our communities. SESL runs annually every February through May, engaging student teams in a real-world experiential learning platform and challenging them to collaboratively design, research, and present an innovative, realistic solution to a community challenge.
SESL is a student-directed challenge that offers a unique and valuable experience students can draw upon throughout their careers helping them hone skill sets needed to be competitive in the new millennium as both business leaders and global citizens by:
- Fostering out-of-the-box thinking in a real-world context
- Providing participants with feedback and critiques from community leaders
- Encouraging student teams to build community
- Offering teams the ability to translate classroom learning into real world action
- Strengthening skill sets of the world’s future social entrepreneurial leaders
Since 2006, over 300 high school students from across the state of New Hampshire have participated and competed in NH’s annual SESL Challenge, bringing personally meaningful projects to the fore in an effort to apply what they learn in the classroom to a real world experience, an experience which anecdotally allows students to overcome learning roadblocks (particularly for non-traditional learners), provides them with an opportunity to feel valued and validated, and solidifies in them the importance of thinking outside the box, dreaming big, and being the change they want to see in the world.
SESL is an initiative of Leadership Teacher, an educational not-for-profit based in New Hampshire that offers real world professional development to K-12 educators and schools, and of The Center for Real World Education, which launches innovative, real world learning opportunities that work to build partnerships among students, educators and communities.
